Wikipedia Summary

Overall I really felt that this past semester was one that was very interesting and will serve me well over the years, especially in regards to my experiences with Wikipedia. The ability to share information as easily as you can on Wikipedia is something that I will always be happy to say that I have been a part of.

The four articles that I edited for the most part were very well received by other editors and almost all of my edits stayed up on the posts. Of all the ones that I edited I think that my Blue Crab edits were the ones that I gave the best input for. I hope to continue to use the skills that I learned and continue to post on Wikipedia in th future.

Last Bob Shillinglaw Edit

For my final Bob Shilinglaw edit I came back to the topic that I had originally started and saw that for the first time other people had made edits helping with the internal Wiki links that I had previously overlooked, which I thought was pretty interesting that other editors for the topic soemthing worth editing. For my final post I added a bit more information about Shillinglaw's current status.

I added: Shillinglaw a long time coach just made history after leading [[University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse]] team to it's first ever Final Four appearance. The team will face Johns Hopkins at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, with projected attendance well in the 60,000+.

Last University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse Edit

For my final edit on the University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse Wikipedia edit I did something that I had not done yet to any other edits that I had made. I deleted some information that was a bit unnecessary as well as false.

I removed: "Key Players include Anthony Ruiz, Kevin Fillapone and George Andrew Turner."

The URL is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Delaware_Mens_Lacrosse

Last wakeboarding Wikipedia edit

For my final wakeboarding edit on Wikipedia I wanted to add a bit more useful information about the maneuvering of the rider behind the boat. I feel that my edit is one that other editors on the subject of wakeboarding will be able to expand off of, offering more information of hitting and approaching the wake.

I added: " A typical beginner to intermediate rider will tend to have an easier time hitting the wake heelside because it tends to come more naturally to the rider. While more advance riders can hit the wake both heelside as well as toeside."

Bob Shillinglaw Wikipedia Edit #2

Similarly to the edit that I made on the "wakeboarding" post I made some small, yet useful adjustments to the "Bob Shillinglaw" post. I linked the posts of "Annapolis, MD" as well as "University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse" so that a reader would be able to get some more information on Shillinglaw.

I added: [[University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse]] and [[Annapolis, Maryland]]

The link to the post is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Shillinglaw

Wakeboarding Wikipedia edit #2

For my second Wikipedia edit I decided to just add a simple edit to the post. I made a change to a part under the trick section of the post, the post had the words "snowboarding" and "surfing,"
but they were not linked to their respective pages on Wikipedia.

So, I added: [[snowboarding]] and [[surfing]]

The link for the post is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakeboarding

Universiyt of Delaware Mens Lacrosse Post #2

For my second post on the topic "University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse" I gave a quick overview of the weekend to come for the Fighting Blue Hens.

I added: After defeating UVA in the first round of the NCAA tournament the Blue Hens look to make a run at the schools first ever Final Four appearance. The only thing in the teams way is [[UMBC]], University of Maryland Baltimore County, another underdog team that has high hopes of also advancing to the Final Four. The game will be hosted at a neutral sight in Annapolis, MD at the [[Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium]].

Along with the information I also made the page link to some additional material, like where the game was to be played and the opponent.

The link is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Delaware_Mens_Lacrosse

Last Blue Crab Wikipedia Post

For my final Wikipedia post on "Blue Crabs" I added an extra little bit of advice to people who harvest crabs in their spare time for a personal use. I gave the useful information about how to fatten up crabs so that when it is time to cook them they are that much more plump as well as tastier.

I added: In some case people will then take the crabs that they have harvested for the day and put them in what is known as a "keeper pot." A "keeper pot" allows for personal crabbers to catch crabs over a period of time, accumulate a decent harvest, and then have a "crab feast." Another advantage of a "keeper pot" is it allows a crabber to fatten up the crabs they catch by feeding them over the week or so that they are harvested. By putting a few pieces of chicken in a day and allowing the crabs to eat, they become fatter, resulting in a more plump crab when it is time to eat them.

I hope that people will put this great piece of knowledge to work, and look forward to the harvest this summer.

Comments on John Battelle's Searchblog's Article- "Sorry, A Google Search Can Get You Passed Over For A Job"

I went through a list of articles on John Battelle's Searchblog and found one that caught my eye, "Sorry, A Google Search Can Get You Passed Over For A Job." The article was one that seemed interesting because as a college student looking for jobs and internships it was interesting to read into about how a simple Google search can put your job into jeopardy. In the tech savvy world we live into today information about someone is located all over the internet. My biggest concern facing getting a job came from facebook.com, but it turns out that is not the only place where information can be found.

Back to the article. The article titled "Judges Say Google Background Checks Are Okay" gave a brief look at how a Google search can effect your job status. The case that they highlighted focused on the fact that information about a person's past job and how they had been fired was found on Google, could add to a case of firing someone. The final gist of the article was to simple be aware that the internet and Google is powerful and that searches about oneself can be used in a negative way towards their job, but who knows it could also possibly benefit them.

Comments on Slashdot's Article- " iPod/iPhone Nano With Touch Panel?"

I recently read through some of the top posts on Slahsdot and found one that interested me, the article was titled "iPod/iPhone Nano With Touch Panel?." The article caught my eye because I am an avid user of my recently purchased 30 gig ipod and like to try and see what Apple will do next to develop their products.

The article spoke of how Apple is working on getting a patent on a touch screen technology that will allow them to apply touch screen to the future iPod Nano. The touch screen idea for such a small product struck up discussion in the replies to the blog. I personally think that Apple can continue to be more innovative then any other hardware company out there, and they will continue to make quality products as well ones that are a step above their competitors.

The link for the article can be found at- http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/07/05/11/2028232.shtml

Comments on Nate Denver's Blog

I just read through Nate's blog and there were many things that caught my eye. The first thing was that he had added a picture of himself, which I found tempting to do to my own blog, it was the first one I had seen with this and I thought it was pretty cool.

I also found most of his Wikipedia articles to be very interesting as well. I am a big fan of the Roots and have seen them in concert a few times, so it was nice to see that he is adding some useful information to the bands Wikipedia article, like the fact that they are playing at this years Lollapalooza.

Overall I found his blog to be very well put together as well as up to date one everything that we are expected to have on our blogs. His blogs URL is http://natesudblog.blogspot.com/

Bob Shillinglaw Wikipedia Edit

The first edit on Bob Shillinglaw was one that I had to make up, because the post did not exsit. I thought that Shillinglaw deserved an article on Wikipedia because he is one of the top coaches in mens lacrosse. The edit was pretty simple to make as I become more familiar with Wikipedia. This is another page that I hope to add more to over the next few weeks.

The articles URL is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Shillinglaw

Blue Crab Wikipedia Article

For my second Wikipedia edit on blue crabs I deiced to talk a bit about how to prepare "soft shell" crabs. The article had nothing in regards to the preparation of the topic so I figured it was something that a reader would have interest in.

I added: "Soft shell crabs are typically prepared by first cutting out the lungs, face, and guts. The soft crab is then battered in flour, egg, and seasoning then fried in oil until crispy."

The edit is one that I think will add a whole new topic of discussion for the blue crab post, hopefully more ideas will come from my post. The URL is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_crab

Wakeboarding Wikipedia Post

I just made my first Wikipedia post on Wakeboarding. Wakeboarding is a water sport that is much like water skiing, but rather then a ski the rider rides on a board similar to that of a snowboard. The post on Wikipedia was very informative, but I though that the intro could have added a bit more about the make up of the line used to tow a rider.

I added: "The lines that tow the rider typically are made of simple rope, but more advanced riders use a line with a wire core to prevent stretching of the line as a rider approaches the wake."

This addition gives a bit more information to the already informative wakeboarding post on Wikipedia. The URL of the post is, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakeboarding

Delaware Lacrosse Wikipedia Edit

I just made my first Wikipedia edit to University of Delaware Mens Lacrosse. The subject previously did not exist on Wikipedia so I simply created the post, and added some current information to the post. It was interesting to see just how easy it is to add information to something the previously did not even exists. Here is the URL for the edit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Delaware_Mens_Lacrosse

I hope to add much more information to this page over the next few weeks. Possibly some pictures as well as a roster and statistics.

Google AdSense

Recently in class we discussed the importance of the new way of marketing known as Google AdSense. AdSense is a form of marketing where someone can sign up a URL to host advertisements on it that pertain to the content of the URL. So say someone has a website that is about surfing, Google will crawl through the internet and place adds on the URL for say a surf board company, which will hopeful be hit as someone reads through the site. The idea is that after someone clicks on the advertisement a small portion of profit will go to the person whose URL is hosting the advertisement. Overall I find that this concept of marketing is beneficial to both the company who is trying to market over the internet, and sites that provides the hosting for the ad. The idea if someone were to search sailing on Google, open up a random page on the search results, and have an ad for foul weather gear waiting in the content of a website that previously had no ad, but does now because Google added one for a company is very interesting. I think that AdSense is another one of the many ways that Google is the front runner for the most innovative company on the planet.

Digg

A recent topic that we discussed in class last week was the website digg.com. Digg is a multi user based internet site whose content is filled by its users. I recently made an account on Digg and find the website very interesting. The concept of the sight is where I find my most interest. The idea of all new news that is on the website be posted by its users it something that not many other media sites are like. There are your typical news sights that comment simply on what is going on in the world today such as MSNBC.com, but Digg is essentially different then the likes of MSNBC.com. The way the website is set up is very interesting as well, there is a list of all the articles posted when first looked at, but there is an array of categories to choose from to make your search that much easier. I even went through and added a story to see how just how easy it is to post on the sight. The URL is http://digg.com/other_sports/Delaware_Men_s_Lacrosse_Win_CAA_Title. Overall I found www.digg.com/news a great way to share and learn over the internet.

Teammate Blog

I just recently went through some of the blog posts on Anne Wylde blog. The one that I really found interesting was the one that was commenting on her second wikipideia post about the town of Paderno del Grappa, Italy and how here stay there on abroad allowed fro her to have some informationg to add to wikipedia. The way that he trip allowed for her to make an experience and really get something out of it and take that an apply it to something like this class. Here is a link to her blog, http://annebuad477.blogspot.com/.

Comments on Modern Marketing- Blog by Sollabarte PR & Marketing

The article "Modern Marketeers Love Change" is a short little articlt that highlights the issue of change in the marketing world. The main information come from marketer Jeff Jarvis and his main idea is that it is more important to foccus on teh culture of the time and have an indepth view of the people inorder to market to them. I feel like he is rigth in every way. It is not allways about the latest things that meet peoples eye, but what thoses people want and understand. the link is http://www.collaboratemarketing.com/modernmarketing/2007/03/modern_marketee.html

Link to the main website

This is a post that was suppsoed to be done earlier in the year, but I guess I just thought any hyperlink would do, but it needs to be the class one, so here it is. http://infotechspring07.blogspot.com/

Comments on John Battelle's Searchblog

This is a post just to comment on the article, "if there was nothing bu time..." on John Battelle's searchblog. The article commented on the futuer of the internet and the sofware and what is next. He comments on how the world of computing has one front runner in Google, and they ask the question if anything else will compete with their advancements. He says how Vista was somewaht of a bust, so now what. I think that the futre for somethign like the internet and computer software is always changing and new companies are always jumping in, so you know someone will be coming after Google sooner or later. Tools for Research

In class when we discussed the idea of the benfits of using the internet for market research. The idea of a Focus Group, where a group of people asked to discus themselves and answer questions asked by a monitor, this is typically used in a face to face interview and is not as easy to get people together as it is with online research.
Things such as Chat Rooms and Discussion Boards are much easier to use and get information from the poeple that are in the surveys. The chat rooms enables the subject of the research to interact in real time with each other while being in seperate places. This make for an easir way to get results and answers to how people feel about a certian topic.

Cybersquatting

One of the topics that we discussed in class that I found interesting was the idea of cybersquatting. The way that it is used in intellectual marketing such as taking someones trademark. The idea of taking a domain name for the purpose of holding onto it untill the name would become popular and then sell it to a trademark holder. I could see this issue arrising when perhaps an upcoming young sports player would have is name taken as a website then have once he becomes famous the websit get be boughten out for a profit. Overall I just thought that the idea a cypersquating was an interesting one.

Away at Albany

This past weekend myself and the Delaware Lacrosse team travled to the bitter clod and snow pilled campus of Albany New York. The game was one that did not go in our favor, but I writing this blog to give a bit of insight of what goes on in the 2 days of beign away from campus and the 5 hour bus ride. The start of the trip begins at the crack of dawn, bus leave at 7:15 and according to coach fi you don't make it there at that time we will leave without you. So wake up at 6:30, get your roomate up, drive down, grab your oversized bag full of everything you will need for the next two days, pop in the i pod, and snuggle up with your neighbor on the bus with your favorite pillow. The drive starts and you struggle to fall back asleep because of the chatter in th background from guys telling stories and the uncomfortable position you are in because you are sharing a row of seats with your buddy that is 6-2 200 lbs. Once you dose off hours go by like minutes, and 20 or 30 songs on suffle latter your already up at Albany and getting ready for a mid day pregame practice. The practice is one that is quick and easy, coach doesn't want to kill you the day before a big game. After practice hop back on the bus in your gear and ride 20 mins to the hotel. Pull up and its your favorite a marriot, most comfortable beds I have ever slept in, the things are so comfrtable you wake up and cant tell which way is up or down, your caught in a cloud of pillows and down comforters. Get into the hotel room, I'm sharing a room with my fellow defnesive midfileder Brett Manney, we tend to stay with players who share the same position. Luckly for me that is one of the funnest and most entertaining people I know in Brett, a 6-3 goofy trip from outside of philidelphia. Our newest instalment to our room is a freshmen named Curtis Dickson, a midfileder from the other side of North America, Bristish Columbia Canada. There is much more to the trip but as for now I'm just going to leave it at this, a long bus ride and a comftorable night sleep with teamates you truley appreciate.

Nana's 90th

Jsut recently my grandmother, Betty Ryan, better known as Nana had her 90th birthday. I got to attened a birthday party for her adn Congresional Country Club in Patmoic Maryland. The night was a very special night, my Nana had made it all the way to 90 and all her family was there to witness it. I got to catch up with cousions that I hadn't seen in many years, hearing about how one is living his dream as a reporter for a newspaper in LA, or how another just recently returned from a life changing 10 month bike ride across south east Asia. Though it was great seeing so many faces that I hadn't seen in so long nothing beat seeing Nana make it to 90. A long time smoker, at least 70 years, Nana has beaten the odds and lived much longer then anyone expects someone to that smoke a pack a day. She has recently quit smoking which I'm sure is part of the reason why she is doign as well as she is now. All and all the birthday was a great time, got to hear unforgetable sotries about how crazy it was growing up with my grandmother, have an unbelivable dinner, and got to spend some quality tiem with my extended family.
